History

Early Years:
Pearse Celtic were founded in 1992 by a group of local youngsters mainly from Togher and surronding areas. The early years saw the club play mainly friendly matches, training and going on bus outings. In June 1995 the club entered the Togher Festival against established Junior teams and did quiet well losing in the semi final to South End on penalties. The club applied for membership of the Cork AUL that summer and were sent into the Third Division for the 1995/1996 season.

Early League Wins
In the first season as a third division side Pearse won the league but only after a dramatic playoff win against Hibernians in Turners Cross in front of a huge crowd.
That season didn’t start so well for Pearse, for after two games the club had only one point. However the club only lost one more league match from the remaining twenty two matches, which earned the club a play-off against Hibernians on Monday the 3rd of June 1996.
Paddy Cremin scored for Pearse on the stroke of half time but Hibs scored ten minutes into the second half and when Hibs scored again in the 88th minute the tie looked over, with seconds remaining a wonderful volley from Mark Nason sent the game into extra time. The tie was settled in extra time, after Paddy Cremmin was fouled in the box, Damian Walsh scored from the resulting penalty kick. That season was captained by current manager Kieran Morey and current club captain Richard O’Shea won the player of the year and Golden Boot with 14 goals.(see picture gallery)

The following season Pearse started the season at a blistering pace but were pushed all the way again by Hibernians and local rivals Harp United. Like the previous season the league went all the way to last game when Pearse had to travel to the Monard to take on Harp United. A draw was good enough for Pearse to win the league but a win for Harp would have meant another play off for Pearse. Like the previous season Paddy Cremin scored the first goal for Pearse after good work from man of the match Martin O’Donovan and Johnny Reid. Harp equalised with 20 minutes remaining to set up a tense finish but the Pearse’s resilient defence stood firm to ensure another league win. Centre back Anthony Morley won player of the year while striker Eddie Kelly won the golden boot with 18 goals.(see picture gallery)

Change of management

The following season saw Pat Buckley take over as manager of the team from Danny Carroll and enjoy a comfortable season as a first division side. This season saw the club play in their first FAI Junior cup match and enjoy a good run with some notable wins but the club eventually lost out away to Ballyfermot in Dublin.

Terry Barrett takes over
In the 1999/2000 season Terry Barrett took over as manager from Pearse stalwart Martin O’Donovan and saw the club push Kinsale for the first division title however the club faded near the end of the season and Kinsale won the league. The same season saw Pearse get to a cup final for the first time against Bandon in the Corinthians Cup but unfortunately the club lost by 1-0. The same season saw Pearse reach another Cup final this time against Temple United in the City Challenge but again the club lost and finished the season without a trophy.Terry stepped down as manager midway through the following season and former player Terry O’Conner took over as manager. Terry O’Conner who suffered a very serious injury while playing for the club in the Togher Festival a couple of season earlier did an excellent job as manager and notched up some fine wins and performances. Unfortunetly Terry could not stay on as manger and club stalwart Martin O’Donovan took over .The next few season Pearse held their own in the first division with regular changes in the management. One of those manager was Eric Goulding who brought players like Terry Dalton the current assistant Manager and Kevin McCoy to the club.

Kieran Morey takes over as managerKieran Morey the captain of the club when Pearse won the third and second division took over as manager midway through the 2003/2204 season in very difficult circumstances but Kieran was able to finish the season in respectable fashion. The following season was equally difficult, the club continued to struggle in the first division and were eventually relegated to the second division.Kieran stuck with the task and in the first season back in the second division Kieran manged to “steady the ship” and add some notable players to the team. That season saw the club finish fourth behind Knockavilla, Dunbar Celtic and Kilreen Celtic. The 2006/2007 season saw more improvement and after a desperate start in the league Pearse finished 3rd behind Postal Celtic and Innishvilla.

Pearse win the second division league:
Kieran and the lads got just reward for years of hard work by winning the league in the 2007/2008 season. Unlike the first year the club won the second division, Pearse won the league this year with two games remaining following a dramatic away win over second placed Shandon Celtic in the Glen. Killian Couch scored the first for Pearse in the first half and the winner came from Paul Cummins in the second half to the delight of the Pearse supporters. Richard O’Shea captained the team to this league success. Jamie Nagle won the Golden Boot while Cian Holbrook won the player of the year award.

Pearse win the First division for the first time. The 2008/2009 season saw Pears compete in the first divison again after an absence of a few years. The clubs goal for the first season was to hold their own and then build on that. The players and managers had a different goal though. The team started ok but after Christmas really hit form and did look like League contenders. Eventually the league came down to a 3 horse race between Greenmount Rangers, Richmond and Pearse. The league went to the very last games of the season when Richmond faced Greenmount and Pearse faced Innishvilla. The Richmond V Greenmount game was first to be played on a Saturday. Greenmount knew a win would have sealed the title for them while a win for Richmond would have seen them with the same points as Greenmount. Greenmount looked like they had done enough to win the league when they were 2-1 up going in to injury time, however like they did against Pearse a few days earlier Richmond scored an equalizer in injury time to the delight of their supporters and the watching Pearse players. This was not the end of the drama and 2 minutes into injury time tempers flared between both sides and after a brawl the referee abandoned the match. This left Pearse in limbo heading into the last game away to Innishvilla who were fighting relegation. The Pearse lads put in an excellent performance and won 4-1. The league title was now to be decided by the management of the Cork AUL and after their meeting it was decided that the result of the abandoned game between Greenmount and Richmond which was 2-2 in injury time would stand.Pearse were AUL 1 champions for the first time. This was a wonderful achievement for the Pearse lads who worked very hard all season. Richard O’Shea again captained the team to this league success. Gavin Pender became the first player to win the Player of the Year and Golden boot in the one season since Richie in 1996.
